Hi there,

This is my Mum. I am trying to paint a bit more loosely but that brings its own difficulties.  Any comments or criticisms would be welcomed.

Thanks,

I wish I could offer portrait advice, hopefully, someone will stop by who can. However, it looks good to me.

I think it would be a bit better if you added maybe a little more color in the shirt. I like the way you painted her eyes....................Gene

Nice job! I think your shadows under the nose should be warmer and under the chin. Areas of the face that look down are usually warm. Also I detect a little muddiness. I have a problem with this is why I noticed. Make yourself lay the paint down and leave it,, don't ush it around and rework it. Not seeing the photo,, I am guessing here... I think the mouth is a little low. I hope I am not offending you,, I am just trying to offer suggestions. I think your mom will love it. Especially since you did it!

I read in a book one time that said, "In the begining you should only paint what you are most passionate about". I have an 8 year old daughter and she will be my next portrait. I suggest that you go to the park with your two little ones, late in the day, set them on a park bench in the sun, with an icecream cone and shoot a roll of reference photos. It is great to get loose, after you know how to be tight. looking forward to more of your art. Paint sharp but show the brush work. Dale in Missouri, USA
