Hello Nighteagle,
This is a great first painting! I like that you have a dark foreground and lighter background--a nice range of values overall. Your reflections are also good in that they are softer than the actual trees. You have a lot of nice layers of depth in your composition.
I like the attention you paid to your trees in general. They seem more finished than anything else in the painting. The wolf almost distracts from the trees... it is not as strong a rendering and looks like you could spend a little more time on him. I wouldn't add more detail though--I think I'd soften his edges so he's soft like the grass. He has fur that would filter the light a bit, rather than leave a hard edge on his outline.
Overall I really do think this is a really strong first attempt and you should keep up with it! |

welcome! and its a very nice first painting indeed!...we all have to begin someplace and then try to advance from there... there are a few keys to check when asking oneself how the painting is progressing.... one important thing is value, the light and dark of a painting... contrasts between values and color is another... depth a third... hard and soft edges a fourth... variety of textures another... these are important keys to ask yourself when stepping back from a painting.... as you have a pc...~wink~..you can check your values by quickly popping the image into a greyscale/black and white..... this permits you to see how it varies... is your bg lighter in value? the distant water? the horizon of the sky area? is the color and value more intense as it nears the viewer/forground? do you have a variety of textures?
i see the sun rising? setting? it could be a bit more of a presence, just a tad touch of sparkle which would give you a bit of directional lighting, setting up a place where you could dance that a bit across the surface a bit stronger.... your trees i think are a bit too strong...only because the wolf...loverly done...is less in value and detail than the trees which seem to be a bit in the distance.... one needs to remember that everything in the distance is normally a bit different/lesser value/or a touch of blue and as that comes closer to us....everything sharpens up a bit more, we can see texture a bit more as well as intensity of color...
all that said? DONT TOUCH THIS ONE!...its done....your first...and should remain this way! now? off to your second!!!! |
