This is a nicer image than that posted earlier. I love the way you can see some of the gleam on the back of the pew. The light on her face is beautiful. Gene

Thank you , Gene. This is my most favorite oil. I am not Catholic, but that doesn't matter! I hope I can manage to do some painting where I can cotrol the lighting to get similar contrasts of light and dark! Beverley

Beverley,
This is an exceptional painting. Her mood and posture are well rendered and the light affects emphasize both. It is absolutely gorgeous. Congratulations!

Great work Bev, in my opinion it's the because figurative work of yours that I've seen. The reflected light at the bottom of her apparel and the strong direct light above that are marvelous! You've really captured the mood.

Thank you for the nice compliment! I checked out your web site and your paintings are wonderful! I could feel the the wonderful sheen of satin! If only I could paint that well! I am uploading a pastel that I did in 1972 that also is using a single light source. Both of these paintings are from National Geographic, so they are for my own enjoyment and gaining experience rather than paintings I can sell. I want to try and photograph subject matter to paint from using a single light source. Likely easier said than done! Beverley

Bev, Thanks for sharing this piece with us, I enjoy working with pastel too, but for me, I hate the powder mess!
As for your complement, I am very humbled, but don't think you give yourself enough credit! I can think of at least four pieces of yours off hand that I would buy if my bank account gave me permission! You do great work, thank you for complementing mine.

That pastel was on Canson or Stratmore paper and I agree, the powder is messy. More recently I have used "Sanded paper" and fine it sooo much better! It holds the pastel so much better and much less excess powder. I loved it for blending skin tones. Much better than the regular paper! I did the "Mother & Child" of my daughter and grandson when he was six weeks old on the sanded paper as well as "Summer cafe" that I did recently. I tried using spray fixative on the "Summer Cafe" with no problem. I used to do pastel portraits when I was a teenager and avoided fixative "like the plague" as it can change the very subtle skin tones. But inn a scene it doesn't seem to matter. Bev

Thank you for such a nice compliment! I want to try to do more paintings using a single light source. I like the ambience that the "Old Masters" created using light and shadow. I am not very experienced with photography, so will have to work hard at learning how to get the special effects that I want. I just bought a wedding dress at "Goodwill" and am hoping to do an oil painting using it as it has beautiful lace over a taffeta underskirt that would look wonderful under those lighting conditions! I have to find someone tall and slim to be my model, however! Beverley
