Water mixable oils again.  These are the last paintings I have completed, around last Christmas.  I thought that the male ballet dancer deserved a bit more of look in, and my inspiration was Matthew Bourne's version of Swan Lake.  Source material was difficult to get hold of, I changed the colours and faces are completely fictitious.  They were a bit of an experiment really and I think the pink one is much less successfull but I had fun playing.  Comments and critiques would be welcome.   (slight dent on pink canvas on shoulderblade)  Thanks.

I agree that your first one is better than the second (but we won't know what we can do unil we try, right?) It is very interesting to me - in a good way. I like the shadows that are casted and the colors you've chosen. I think it's probably the photo and my lack of being able to zoom in, but his head looks like it was cut from something else and then added on because I can't see the neck or the very top of his right shoulder. Love how you captured the light on the muscles. Very iimpressive.

Definitely prefer the 1st one. The lighting is much more dramatic and the details on the hands and muscles are very well done.

I know the first is more anatomically correct, but I think I like the second more. not sure why yet. Maybe just because it makes you look longer. It has a Picasso feel (when he was good).

BTW... How do the H2O oils feel? I'm very interested... Do you notice any difference at all?

i agree with jim...although at first, because of my love and natural pull for dark bgs, i like the first, but something draws me to the second, and its exactly what you mention jim, seems akin to a lot of Picasso's style and pieces..i like the exaggerated trunk...and mayhaps the symbolism, even if there was no intent, upon the cross wrists, behind the back....

though in both pieces? i feel a lack of stronger dramatic darks....if you greyscaled this i bet you would see that there were not a lot of value contrasts...something that i believe would add a lot more drama to these two pieces....

how large are the canvases? lately i have increased the size canvases i work on and find its working out for me, and my customers

Thanks for your time everyone, its very motivating when such esteemed artists take the time and trouble to comment.

Jim, I have never used normal oils so cant compare. My first efforts were with acrylics and then I discovered the water soluables almost by accident. I find them very practical and whilst I know no better am going to stick with them as I dont really have the space for traditional oils, my understanding being that they take longer to dry and are pretty messy and smelly.

OWS, the canvases are about 24 x 30 - I have barely even considered canvas size before. In about 100 paintings time I will hopefully have a better idea of what my style and direction is and perhaps then put a bit more thought into these things. In the meantime, Picasso eh, how fantastic......maybe I have been subliminally influenced.
