This is water mixable oil on an acrylic background done about three years ago.  It was done from a photo and I think my inexperience prevented me avoiding some of the pitfalls.  I touched it up last Christmas but because I painted it fairly thinly with too much water, a lot of  the original paint lifted and I wished I had just left it alone.  I would be interested in any comments, because although I wont do anything more on this one I think I quite like the idea of working on portraits and bodies for a while.

August, I really like his expression as so apprpriately suggested by the title. If you changed your mind, I don't think you'd have to do much to touch this up. I'm not one to paint portraits, so take this with a grain of salt, but I would soften his raised cheek caused from his hand resting on it and add some darks to the background; but on the otherhand, I kind of like the softness.

I think you did a very good job of capturing the moment.
A darker background would enhance the work you put into
the portrait, but I do understand your hesitancy to do anymore.

I think you did a very good job,I love his hand. I do agree that some more dark in the background would give a nice contrast.

Thanks for the kind words.  The portrait of Dame Judi Dench in the National Portrait Gallery in London at the time was my inspiration.  Its currently visiting the National Portrait Gallery in Washington and quite stunning in real life.  Anyway, there was method in my madness at the time.

NIce portrait! I agree with Jim about the background. My only crit would be that the pinky finger seems a bit lost with the upper lip.
