Ok so I already posted this in the garden angel contest, but I've never entered a contest before and the suspense is killing me--so I thought I'd repost it here and get some critique at least. I'm not entirely sure yet that I'm going to stick with the title. it's watersoluble oil on gessoed paper 11 1/4' x 14 3/4"

I like the colors, and the composition. I think the figure is not as it needs to be, and the edges of all the shapes are hard, which makes things look a bit cut-out. The water is the best part of the painting, but the circular effect where his finger is touching the water is flat to the viewer's eye, there's not the ellipse of a circle viewed from an angle.

thank you for your reply. I really like how the water turned out also as well as the compositiion. I didreally struggle to get the back leg on the figure to com out right., Although I was pretty happy with the rest of him. yeah I let my left brain symbolic drawing take over on the ripples around the finger I know I was thinking circle and not focusing on that it would look like an ellipse from that angle. I suppose it's probably to late to go back and change it. I didn't because it was so close to the deadline and i was afraid it would mess up the reflection next to it. I did not want muddy water there. What would you suggest as far as softening edges? I am still learning to do all this without exactly copying a photo which is not nearly as fun as using your imagination. I usually do watercolors and am not as familiar with the watersoluble oils (don't do regular oils because of the smell )

sometimes? if we place ourselves in the position of the pose? it helps us to understand it....and posing in front of a mirror? helps a lot! i think we all should own one of those cheapo wal mart no framed long mirrors...if only so we can use it for something like this...er...i broke mine..LOL....but...

the rear leg? i believe would have been faced downward, rather than at us...? but then i would have to get down on the floor to feel that and eh...dont want to do that...~grinzz~...

and? for all those out there that hate oils cause they think they smell? its not the oil pain usually, its the turps you might be using...~wink~...try using ordorless like ~thin-x~ or covering it when not in use...and? when i paint? except for the beginning stages, i dont even have any turp out...i use it only to clean my brushes..

Yea I tried posing a few times, and had one of my kids do a foot pose in an attempt to figure out what looked wrong with the back leg. I think the problem is that the back leg should have been tucked in closer and not able to see the whole leg ( there goes that left brain thing again aieaie aie) I was thinking at the time I drew it that the front leg was dropped on a little lower plane than the back one because it was sticking down into the water a little. I should have believed my eyes and changed it accordingly.

Yeah, I'm going to have to try the oderless paint thinner --or even at least get a thinning medium for the watersolubles. If thinned very much with water it tends to have a grainy and uneven consistency. Unfortunately I appear to be perpetually broke.

Oh well. I mainly gave oils a try because I got hooked on watching Bob Ross. Got to love his happy little trees
