Hello, I am new although this painting is not.  I did it a few years ago, my first foray into water mixable oils, Windsor and Newton Artisan.  Previously I had used only acrylics but wanted to try something a bit more manageable.  I was looking at renaissance artists at the time and was using a yellow ochre underpainting and then thin layers to build up the flesh.  My welcome waggon posting has an acrylic painting using same method.  The subject of this painting came about because having looked at many great renaissance masterpieces it struck me how awful they were at capturing babies (obviously without the benefit of photography).  I nearly overpainted it pretty pink and blue and gave it to the babies parents, but I am glad I didnt now even if it is a bit odd.  Any comments and critiques would be appreciated.  I am here to learn.  Thanks.

Welcome.

Its beautiful and definitely different.
Just wondering if your shading couldn't have been darker some areas on the body...

Maybe it just the photo....

The feet seem really small compared to the rest of the baby. but I think you have some nice tones in the skin. This painting reminds me of that scene in Superman.......when he was a baby and they sent him away from Krypton in that star thingy. (Must be the red and blue )

Thanks Retha, the photo is fairly accurate and I agree with you about the shading. However its not worth messing with now. I'll put it down to experience.

Jess, I checked my original photo and you are so right about the feet. I cant believe that I, nor anyone else didnt notice this. Its so obvious now its screaming at me. Those renaissance masters are under no threat from me! I'll post the rest of my back catalogue, about three more pictures, then pick up the brushes this weekend and start something new. There, I have said it out loud now so I have to.
