I would like to paint an oil in sepia.  The picture was taken in 1928 of an elderly gentleman with a very tall hat in a horse & buggy.  The snapshot is in black and white.  I feel that the picture would really look great in sepia.

I recall from an art class years ago that

step l.  brush a light coat of raw umber on a gessoed canvas. Let it dry or a  spray a light coat of varnish on it, then draw your picture on the raw umber.  Does this sound correct, if so, what do I do next, colors etc.

I would use Raw umber white and yellow mixed in sepia tones to continue if it was me .

Ah!.  That's a thought that had not occured to me.  Adding the yellow would perk it up a bit.    I found a lovely 4" wide, 11 X 14  frame that stood out above all the other frames.  I figured that I could paint the picture to fit the frame.  The elegant gentleman should be elegantly framed.

Thanks, Ajam
