This is great Jim! What is most interesting to me......is that I can see Van Gogh's style on the farm house and the trees......but that sky is definitely yours! Beautiful work

I logged back in to reply and the pic I thought I posted wrong was included. That's what I get for posting at 6am.
OK, thank you Jess and I have a question... Should I stroke up that sky? I was going for the colored reference I posted a few times up there. I wanted it to look authentic to the early van Gogh period but not try to blend my style and his. It's still on my easel... Please let me know what you think. |

I like it the way it is. Nice going Jim. If you want to make it more
authentic looking add the lines in the sky. Right now it's a hybrid.
Nothing wrong with that.

Hi Jim....
I agree with "the other Jim's" comments.....I also like just the way it is. But it sounds like you wanted the darker van Gogh sky.....which (as Jim said) could be achieved by adding the dark lines. Maybe darken the clouds above the trees a little bit? I think the left side is perfect as-is.

Funny you should mention the potato eaters Shana. This farmhouse looks like it would fit in perfectly
with that painting. I did an acrylic version of the potato eaters about 2 years ago. It's on my website if
your interested in looking at it. Spooky Jim. I don't know if you've seen it either, but what a tie in.

Thanks for all of your in put! So now I have a decision to make, which of course is a prelude to the martini process. 8^)
People that don't appreciate van Gogh think it's so easy to paint like that. It's very hard to paint like some one else, at least to me...
I have a frame that is very 1880-'90s , Impressionist's looking and am painting for the frame. I've had it for a while and it is so beautiful, it stands on its own as a work of art. I just can't leave it empty any longer and wanted to fill it with some thing that looks like a van Gogh.
Jim, I looked for you potato eaters rendition and couldn't find it. Please post a link of the painting. I'd be very interested in seeing it. |

Jim, outstanding painting on The Potato Eaters. Right down to the lines on the hands! The likeness is extremely close. van Gogh fans should go take a look at this by following the link in Jim's reply above this one. Thanks for posting that!
OK, I think I'll add a few brush strokes to this painting. I'll post it for welcomed commentary. I'm still going for the early 1880s .vs the end of his career, hard core lines.

| Just my thoughts...maybe darken the two trees on the right (light appears to be coming from behind when looking at the front of the building and the darkness of the figure) and make a better distinction in contrast between the sky and ground. I like what you've done to create your own original. One doesn't get to see ones like this very often and it's a nice change. I can't wait to see what results in those "added few brushstrokes" you refer to. |

Whats this about potatoe eaters showing up?
If you want your A frame painting to look more like the dutch tutor?
If so first or last You need to tone the overall painting color down,
and wouldn't your front trees need to be allot darker?

You have a very nice painting there. I love the color scheme. I would hate for you to change anything because of everyones ideas,, I think you should put as much of your own self in the painting as you can. Personally ,, I think it is good the way it is.

Why... Because I admire van Gogh to a savant's degree. Because I think he was the true innovator of modern art. He painted with passion, more passion than realistic talent that was so overwhelming that it stood as is.
I really appreciate everyone's in put on this, I really do. Here it the final piece. Please let me know what you think. Candid opinions welcomed. 8^) |

Very good Jim. I like the muted light coming from the house.
Your A frame house is unique and your own, but the style is
definitely Van Gogh.

I think I understand a little.
Your first image changed too, can't compare?
It looks like some of the streaks in the sky and the trees should be a deeper value -
they blend in with their surroundings to much? lost
The other van Gough painting has a vague green tone to the darks at ground level, same value as sky, but different color tone. And Maybe a little higher value of light in the hot spots of your windows and reflected light on the outside ground - so that the some of the 'lights value' is a lighter value than the orange in the sky and the landscape. (like he is representing in his drawing?) (Print out a gray scale?) |

Very good points and I appreciate the time you all are giving this. I mistakenly uploaded the pic with the same name. I thought about the window light after I posted this too and you're right, it needs done. Let me take a whack at this again and humbly ask that you give it the once over.
Sorry to be a pest with this thing but it means a lot to me to get it right and I value this forums' opinion. |
