11" by 14"  oil on canvas covered board.

Please let me know what you think.  Also if I should do any more detail using the photo.    I did this on our last plein-air outing for the summer, with the local art club.  Since it is impossible to get these ladies back,   I only had 3 hours to work on this painting, and I kind of like it,, but it seems unfinished.  So should I sand it off and do another one, or try to finish with some more detail using the photo?

I like the freshest of it. The only thing that bothers me is the brown shrub area right middle under the fencing, keeps drawing my eye to the spot and away from the two artist painting. I do think you need something to make your eye move from one artist to the other, there seems to be a void there, maybe a empty chair. Just an idea.scochran

Hi Shana,, thank you. I know ,, the brown spot is bad... I was hurrying to put paint on there. I definitely will try to fix that. Cool that you saw the void.. When I started there was 3 ladies,, one got up and left,, I had to erase her.

Something about the painting disturbs me. I think that I feel like it should be two separate paintings. In my mind, it just doesn't seem to hold together. I also feel like the colors are to wishy-washy. I'm not a great art critic so accept my comment with a grain of salt.

Snowartist;

I hope you don't mind. I made a couple suggestions on your art that may be

helpful. If not just ignore.

I think the photograph irritates me slightly more than the painting...

personally i think its a compostionally dull photograph which has limited use of spacial dynamics or colour relationships, so it would be hard to make this photograph into an interesting painting unless you took it to extremes (say abstract expressionism) as the different layers could become quite interesting (in Rothko-esque colour blocks popped into my head when looking at the composition). Though as a figural piece, theres little point as its rather dull.

secondly i think you have put too much turps in the paint mix which has killed the intensity of the oil colour, makes it look chalky and brittle.

I dislike it, but i wouldnt bother writing something if i thought it was absolute tosh. So on with the next one painter.

its art because i say it is - Duchamp

I would-
Leave it alone.
Learn from it.
Plein aire is impressionistic.
I like the areas of fresh clean spontaneity.
(I wish the brown wasn't there, the rocks, ect)
Next time think 'only paint what supports my vision'.
Keep your passion alive.

Thank you so much to everyone. Thank you Retha, I love your work. Thank you eye candy, I like everyones opinion, and you don't have to be an expert to know what you are talking about. Art 81 I love your changes to my painting! Do you mind if I copy your suggestions? Dear Kierkegaard, thank you for being so honest! Takes guts to say what you don't like. Personally ,, I love to paint people, people in any situation is my favorite thing! They are so fascinating. And Connie, Thank you for the valuable lesson.
