| I'll never be a Degas, but I love the grace of the ballet dancers, so I gave it a try. This is a 16 x 20 oil on canvas mounted on hard board. Since I don't have access to photographing ballet dancers, or viewing them orther than on stage, I use a photo from the NY Times as my model. Everthing in the photo was modified with the exception of the pose. I would like a critique on my setting and choice of color, or anything else that you feel could be improved. |

| Very nice! My eye goes right to the bright floor tho. If it is the girl who is supposed to be the focal point, maybe soften the floor a little. Beautiful painting! |

Your girl is beautiful, but I do agree that if you just " dulled" the floor she would be more the focal point. Also, it might just be my eyes but it appears that the perspective of the floor is off, going up instead of across.I LOVE your colors. |

| I agree with what was stated above. Also, you did a nice job with her shadow on the floor, but I'm wondering if it would continue a bit up the wall. She's very graceful, and yet I feel her strength. I'm very impressed with your rendering, especially knowing what you had to work with - it looks like a hard feat to me. |

I do agree with most of the comments made and have made some modifications that you will see here in this photo. And yes, I felt that the shadow should go up the wall but, to be honest, I don't know how it should look. See my modificaations and tell me what you think.
Once I can create a similar situation with the shadow, I'll modifie the shadow on the wall. |

Phil, I'm like you in that I don't know exactly how to accomplish the shadow on the wall without a reference. But here's my guess: it appears that the light sourse is primarily from above and in front of her, so I would think the head of the shadow would go no further up than her physical waistline. The shadow I think would be a "squashed" image of her waist to her head. You probably don't have to be totally exact, but suggestive. I bet you can do it. But let me remind you that I'm only guessing. |

| Phil, I like your changes. As for the shadow ( now this may not be macho....BUT) Try standing with a bright light behind youself and see how the shadow goes, it will give your artistic mind the idea of how to do it. Good luck. |

| I finally decided that I would let the shadow fade away since the intensity of the shadow is directly proportional to the square of the distance from the object. So the shadow would be less intense and more diffuse as it was further away. Well, anyhow, this is what I think I remember from my physics class. |

Hi Phil! Your dancer is beautiful. I know you submitted for criticism. But I liked it the way you had it originally. What happy energy. It reminded me of those Flamenco ad posters you find in the streets of Spain. The color of my cabinetry is stained in that very same original yellow color. So it actually exists. The way it was, made my eye go directly to the strength in the legs of that girl, which is really the core of a dancer. I can see the happiness in your soul though. All your paintings show it. It is still beautiful, yet in a more subtle way. I admire your work. keep on paintin' |

I do thank you for your wonderful comments. I Love to paint and I try to paint what I think is beauty to the eye and so I named myself eyecandy. Of course, I don't always succeed, but I always try.
I retired in 1997 and have been painting and studying ever since with a hiatus when I lost my beloved wife died after 56 years of a very loving life with her.
My painting don't have any political messages. They are just a window to something beautiful.
Thank you again,
Phil (eyecandy) |
