Hello everyone! I just finished another still life this past week and would like to share it with you all. I hope you can excuse the glare on the right side above the oranges and muslin and the glare that can be seen here and there in the basket.

Man... I'm starting to become a fan of still life with the last few to hit the forum. Good God, look at that blue! Your perspective and lighting are flawless. Bravo!

The detail work is really amazing. The folds in the fabric....the transparancy of the trifle bowl....the shadows and design on the plate....the texture of the fruit and basket. Incredible work! I agree with Jim's comment....the still lifes on this site are just getting better and better!

Hi.......Very nice. I, too, appreciate the folds and shadows in the cloth. I'm currently working on a pastel still life with a cloth as the setting. Difficult to see the different values in the white cloth. You did very well. May I ask you what type of lighting you use? What wattage in your bulb, etc.? Thanks for sharing this..........Gene

Thanks so much for the replies! I appreciate the comments. Unfortunately the top right area of cloth is pretty washed out due to the camera flash, but I am grateful for the compliments on the cloth nevertheless. Gene, this was painted with natural light only. I have a small studio with a north window. Typically, I'll have at least one project going on using the natural north light and other projects using various lamps for my light sources.

wonderful colors and perspective. I thought it was a photograph. Everything looked so real. I would love to see the real painting. It must be fabulous.

Phil, in the original painting the oranges really stand out, each orange is a slightly different in color from each other, some are more yellow, others more red, etc. The photo really negates the variations though. The day a camera comes out that does a true color match, I'll explode with joy!

Cameras do have their limitations when it comes to color since there is a limit to the color spectrum that it can show. It does help if you calibrate your monitor and make profiles for the paper and printer that you use to reproduce the image, but even then it isn't perfect. Especially when the color differences are small. However, in spite of all of that, the painting is wonderful. |
