Hello all,
I just finished this one, 16x20 on canvas (I always forget to say size and what it's on). Please let me know your thoughts and as always, thanks for looking. |

| You have done a fantastically realistic painting here Jim. I can feel the warmth of the last rays of the sun. I especially like the water, the little ripples and bit of splash against the pilings....I said Jim (?) I think that is correct? |

This is great Jim! I saw it on your site and was going to ask you why you haven't put it up. I can hear Otis Redding whistling and singing now! Jim

Thank you all for the kind words. I had a hard time with the patience on this one. Yellow and black make green as I sure you all know and every time I rushed it on this one, it diluted the the sun. I had to wait a week to just to paint the little glow around the sun bleed.
Jim, that was one of the songs I was listening to while I painted it. One of my favorites of all times. Now he was a great artist! |

| Very well done, definitely one of your best (although I'm extremely partial to 'Above the Storm'...my personal favorite of yours). The only thing I would recommend would be to not do silhouettes in black, rather use raw umber or burnt umber+Prussian blue or black mixed with another color that will compliment the other colors. Straight black seems to suck the life out a color painting, but a colored alternate to black with add dimension. That said, I love the strong variations of orange, the water and sun. The color reminds me of many of the Arizona sunsets we enjoy. |

Again, thank all for your inspiring words!
ejc... You are so right about the black. I've even done that with others, adding the Prussian blue mostly, and I'm very grateful that you've reminded me of this technique. I'm still stuck in silhouette mode. And for you to name a painting of mine that is not the subject of the thread is an extreme complement to me.
Art is such a puzzling thing to measure. I was kind of indifferent about Above the Storm, and yet you name it as the one you like most out of mine. I guess each painting that someones does has a voice and the viewer either hears it or not. Thanks again! |

| Jim, I can totally relate to you when you say, "I was kind of indifferent about Above the Storm, and yet you name it as the one you like most out of mine. I guess each painting that someones does has a voice and the viewer either hears it or not." I have a friend who is a very successful Western Artist that just raved to me about a particular work of mine, a work that I did not really like at all. I suppose if we all have the same point of view then art would be very cookie cutter indeed. I'm looking forward to seeing more work from you. |

I like the composition using a silhouette against that strong color. Good point about black. I use raw umber in place of black. |

| This is absolutely beautiful and I'd buy it in a minute (if I didn't have walls covered with my own works and had more space!) I love sunsets and ocean scenes and you've captured the warmth so well. Envy your talent and just gave me inspiration to do some more sunset ocean scenes and attempt to catch some of the realism you portray. You've got the gift! Donna Drickey |

| Wow... I am humbled by the responses you all are writing here. Donna, I too share the same passion for sun lit scenes and water. To me, it offers the most vibrant colors to embellish. Again, thank you for such high praise... That has inspired me to start another right now. |

| Again, thank you all for your encouraging posts. I had a lot of good comments with this one at a festival over this last week end. Now that that's over, I'll have time to look at some of the fine work on this site and paint again. |
