The father of Country music. I had all his songs on vinyl.

Hi Richard,
You have certainly captured movement with this painting. It's a good painting.

All I remember about Hank Williams was seeing the commercials for compilation CD's of his songs. Sorry! But I like the painting and think you did an especially nice job on the shirt and guitar!

Richard, did you do this from a photo?? And if so, I need to tell you that the music written all over his shirt is totally wrong. The flags on the eighth and sixteenth notes are going in the wrong direction. I can't imagine any musician wearing a shirt that was so blatantly wrong musically! Or did he not read music? I don't know anything about him, really, but that hit me, as a person with a B.S in Music, right smack in the face. But even a beginner in music would see that immediately. I still love the painting, but I could never have it on my wall because of the musical errors on the shirt. Maybe his shirt was made that way..........I see this all the time, music written on the side of Diaper Service trucks with the notes all wrong, trying to write out "Brahms' Lullaby" or "Twinkle, Twinkle". Drives me nuts! Again, the painting is nice, but the music is all wrong! I think you should find a musician to help you out and correct it and save your painting....Gene

Thinking about the artists of that era, I'm betting he just bought a jacket or the people putting the photo op together just had wardrobe wheel out a rack. Not knowing much about Hank, I'm betting a lot of his was raw talent at the right time and not much schooling until later on. Then again, he was in uncharted waters and writing the book as he went along too. Not my kind of music but all the respect an innovator warrants.

BTW, I wouldn't touch this painting (all due respect Gene) photo reference or not.

I used a photo for reference. The musical notes were meant as a design element to indicate music.
They were not to indicate a tune. Incidently, Hank Williams wrote over 150 songs, words and music.
He must have known something about music.

Please know I'm not insinuating that Hank Williams stumbled into a music career and do not claim to even know much about him. Only that he was a legion and if he was OK with the jacket, it ought to be OK with his public.

I didn't mean to be picky, but I would bet that anyone who knows music at all will cringe. I would bet money on that..............Sorry, but this is like painting a picture of a restaurant and then spelling the word "resturant" on the sign, or maybe painting a still life of an apple and then give it  maple leaves.    I would be totally turned off, no matter how well the painting is done. ............Gene

Gene... I would be interested in how the proper notes should appear. Would you illustrate for me how they should be? Richard

Hi........I'll be glad to do what you asked, Richard, if I can figure out how to do it on my computer, seeing my computer doesn't have musical notations on it. I suppose I could do it by hand, then scan it into my computer and then post that picture. I will do that in a few days. Or, could you send me an email with your email address and then I can do this directly to you?................ I'm up to my neck in painting right now for various deadlines...........Bear with me, please.................Gene

Richard, First of all, it's an excellent painting and you can't go wrong painting a legend! Just seeing someone say "Old Vinyls" makes me feel old!. I grew up with them! Anyways, It's excellent art! I did a Drawing of Hank Jr. myself! I like it! If I was to repaint it, I would fix the notes on the jacket, however, don't let anyone take away from your skills because the music notes are incorrect! It's good art either way! And a lot of the country singers of that day wore flashy clothes just to stand out in the crowd.

Hi Richard,
I think you have made considerable strides in your portrait painting.
I wish the over all black was a deeper crisper tone, it may just be this image.
Hine sight they say is always 20/20 but I wish you hadn't cut so much of the image,
and I think the distance in front of him sound be greater than the distance behind him.
the left side is crowded, and why keep the black strip? right side almost empty, but maybe just this image.
These are small things, compared to all the work you have done.
Love the reflection in the guitar.
Proportions of the right arm, from elbow to shoulder bother me,
but who cares. Great Job. Most observes do not see allot of things.
I wouldn't change a thing -
I see your keeping your Passion alive - it definitely shows.

Hi Connie, I agree with your observations. The painting is part of a larger paintng that includes another figure.I wanted to focus on Hank so I had to crop tight, too tight. I painted it originaly for my brother who is a great fan of Hank Williams. It is titled "Hank in the sky"

This is a super painting, and I kind of like it that the musical notation on the shirt is not classically correct. These early country singers were not classical musicians, they were not very musically sophisticated, and that's okay - Hank's songs were about feeling, and were simple tunes, just done with that emotion. If that's how the shirt was, then that's how it was, warts and all. Let 'er rip, Richard!
