Hello painters!

I am relatively new to the forums, and very new to oil painting. I have been working in watercolor for 10 years and last year I decided that it was time for a change. Since then I have taken several plein air workshops here in the Rockies. Last month I took two here in Winter Park, and after 8 false starts, I finally finished a painting I feel is worth sharing, or at least not embarrassing.

I plan to go back in and tweak it a bit, so suggestions are appreciated!

Thanks!
Kate

It looks very good. By tweaking do you mean adding some
detail to the painting? That would be fine, but the way it is
looks good too.

Hi Jim,

Thank you for commenting. I was thinking of making the mountains look a little less like rounded mounds, refine their shape a bit... and the peachy color in the foreground looks a little chalky to me. What do you think?

Thanks!

Hi Kate,

You critiqued my painting and you were right on.  The horizon wasn't straight across and the addition of a little red perked up the painting.  I'm still playing with it and am trying not to overdo the red, but it looks better.

As for yours, it creates a nice soft mood, but I would like to see a touch of red in it, but not too much.  I'm not great at critiques, but I'm learning.  I've been painting for 10 year and started at age 73.  I love it.  It beats the practice of dentistry, which, I might add, is also a form of art and sculpting.

Yeah Kate, the changes you want to make would make it
different, I'm not sure about better.

Hi Kate,

This looks really good.  I particularly like the soft edges that you created.  Who did you take the workshops with?  Was there anything in particular you learned that stood out in your memory?  I am always curious as to what people feel was the biggest "aha" moment in a workshop.

Thanks Judith. Sorry for the late reply. I took my workshops with Jeanne Mackenzie and Karol Mack. Jeanne taught me the importance of keeping your darkest darks transparent. Karol taught me how to make a sky feel like a sky. It's interesting what you get out of each workshop--I may have seen/heard those things 20 times before, but this time they stuck.

Looks good to me....leave it alone and use it as a starting point.  I kept my first paintings and learned so much as I went along.  I look back at them and chuckle.  My motto is "Keep going forward".

Hi Kate,
I think that this is a great painting and that you don't need to change a thing.

Hmmmmmm... I don't think I'd touch a thing on this painting and as rhea said above, you may rue that day trying to get back to where you were. All your colors are there in a consistent stoke complementing each other. Damn fine painting if you ask me.
