Thank you Jim.
Here is the tree trunk. I need a rest now, the beach towel is full of stripes and blocks and it is next.

Thanks Shana and mlw.
I thought about the comp for a week before I drew the image on the canvas, but I found out that I needed to raise the drawing about 5 inches. So I had to erase and that doesn't work too good on canvas, but I got it right I think. I got a lot done today and it's shaping up. |

HI Bert.....
Thanks so much for sharing the stages! That tree trunk is great......it probably woud have taken me WEEKS just to do that. (But then again....I work really slow ) Good for you tackling striped fabric and checkered fabric! Not an easy task.

Thanks Jess and Gene.
This is actually my second tree trunk, and I think the secret is to put in the dark first and then the bark detail with a dry brush technique. Try it, it isn't that hard, but you do have to learn discipline, and that means concentrated work.
I have painted the hands and toes but I forgot the thumb, not really necessary, but I see it. |

| here is the rough-out of the fingers and toes. Also I am concerned with the foreground on the leftand need to think of a solution. Also in the finish stage I need to address the flesh colors. |

Perhaps a little dappled light in the lower left?
I'm enjoying watching your process. |

Thanks Kate, I've been playing with that solution all afternoon. I see something to the right in my photo reference, it is a small ditch that the animals use for drinking. It will cut across the bottom on the same angle as the rest of the picture. The perfect solution. |

| Ok but don't go too dark, I like that your composition keeps the eye up around the tree. The simplicity is nice in that corner. Very Andrew Wyeth-esque. |

| Well, I painted the stream, but I didn't like it. So I scaped it off and returned the painting to it's original state plus a little of Kate's suggestion. I didn't even take a picture. I just could't paint the shallow water, so maybe I'll learn how later. Some of my paintings get repainted, sometimes 30 years later. |

The drawing looks good Bert. But, the painting application needs to be worked on. I would be careful not to create too many hard edges. Edges don't exist in real life they are just changes in value. Soften your edges and go over your grass area with other colors....scumble some umber, ochre and different values of green. Mix those colors up and put them down in a little more casual way. Am I making any sense???
Keep up the good work!

| Judith, yes you are making sense. I am painting on this every day, and that is what is taking so long. Edge control, depth of field and color enhancement in such a big painting is time consuming, but I'm getting there. |
