Last year I went to NC in the fall- leaf peeping time- and painted this summe scene from it.

Actually I wanted to study how many greens I could get, and how far I could go with the following palette because I usually dont use earth colors  :

permalba white   phthalo green   cad yellow lt.   azo green (py 129 i think)    cad red light    raw sienna    as the main body colors

I also used tiny amounts of thalo red rose   light red   burnt  sienna   raw umber   black (for mixing green only, not darkening mixtures) arylide yellow   cobalt blue  chromium oxide green.

I also was interested in painting the water because landscapes are new to me, and I have never painted falling water at all. The rocks were actually grey, but to me they didn't "fit" with the summer greens I had chosen, although they did look good with the yellows and reds in my reference photos.

Very nice work Llarian. Great job on the water first time or not.
Love the various shades of green you used too.

I think it's wonderful Llarian! I really love those "rock steps" on the left. I think your first attempt at painting water was very successful. Congrats!

This painting is now at a local art show. It was accepted, but I did not expect it to win any awards. Most people consider waterfalls and the like very trite, so unless you can really do something original, don't bother entering one to win anything. However for me, I consider it a success because I got to experiment with greens and it was my first attempt at a waterfall. Plus, it had a home even before it was finished, because it reminded the new owner of her childhood home. Cutting edge stuff might win awards and get in shows, but pretty scenes actually sell.

Yes, it is a success! I've come to realize that jurists are "just people" and you never can tell what will win an award and what won't. If you found someone who loved it enough to buy it, you are a success! Isn't that one reason we paint, to bring joy to someone else? To me that is what art is all about. Not the sale, but the enjoyment your work brings to other.......................Congratulations! Gene

Very nice Llarian, I paint several times a year in NC and love it. You captured a beautiful sunny afternoon there. Your success should be measured by how fortunate you were to be there and experience the location and how many people will want to spend a day in such a wonderful setting. I know I am one!
