Here is the ref. photo that I took and 4 hours, beginning to end, of today's progress. Drawing, and first stages of blocking in... this is 16 x 20, oil on linen.

Trying a new way of doing it instead of "finishing" area by area as I usually do. I'm going to try to work all over simultaneously, lets see how THAT works for me! Learning as I go.

Looks like The Incredible Hulk to me at this stage!!! lol....

Coming along beautifully. The photo has created some distortion of proportion of head to body.

It looks as if photographer was shorter than subject, therefore head is farther away and pushed back, making body too large for head. In a photo our eye accepts this, but if not careful can be emphasized in a painting.

I love the colors and folds of the shirt, beautifully done. If he is the Incredible Hulk, then he is a handsome one - LOL. You achieved a lot for one day, which means it is flowing from your brush no problem, so this technique must be working for you. Looking forward to seeing this finished.

Here's day one on face skin tones.....colors aren't exactly like they are IRL..but it's pretty close. LONG way to go, but making progress on day 2.

P.S. I AM shorter than he was,lol....I took the photo standing on steps coming up from the deck that he was standing on. I thoughtI was just about eye level with him. As far as the distortion...I think the fact that he was a little big around the middle (which is where his arms were resting) causes it to look too large there. you think?

I doesn't really matter in this one, his shirt and sleeves and large so makes the body believable, I wouldn't worry about distortion in this particular one.

Starting to come together.

I'm wondering why you put a layer of green over the whole canvas when his shirt and skin etc are not needing those hues?  Just curious.. maybe you could save paint and only put the green outside the subject in the background.

Well, I do like green undertones in skin...it works well with the colors I use for skintones...they seem to compliment each other well...

I hope the distortion is eliminated now...hard to take good pictures of this! I'm getting ready to add the newest photos of where I am now...

Hello Grace...thanks so much! I'm not finished with it, though, I have to completely paint his shirt, what is there is only the underpainting with green canvas still showing through. I put lights and darks down over my white charcoal pencil lines so I wouldn't lose them throughout the process of painting the flesh tones and background. Just keep checking back because hopefully by tomorrow I will be able to post another photo of the shirt with progress made.....also, skintones aren't exactly correct, his face doesn't glow magenta in real life, lol....I can't wait to get a better photo to post which is closer to the painting IRL....

Thanks again!!

I think you've done an incredible job. I have never attempted a portrait (out of fear), and so I have a great respect for those that can do this. I'm amazed, in awe and look forward to seeing you do another (any in the works?)

This is a incredibly job, beautifully done.
I appreciate the work progression you have included in your post.
It shows the work required to accomplish such a beautiful work of art.
I guess there are a few finishing things I would change yet.
On the left side of image there are 4-5 lines of color changes that I would blend a little more, unity.
There's a rose colored hot spot on the top of his head in this image? that distracts me.
I also think it would be nicer to add more highlights in his hair - in the front- where you show it shaded, keeping it similar to the left side. The corners of his mouth are pulling more than his eyes?
