You have the right idea about doing a painting a day. Great way to grow as an artist. Too bad I don't follow my own advice. Good job on breakfast. scochran

Hi Judith,
Although I don't do one a day I've gotten to the point where I try to do one of the 5 x 7 boards at least once a week and it's very helpful.

Hello All,
It took me about an hour to do this and it was very cold...I gave it to my cat since she had been eying it the entire time. Painting every day is a great discipline. Tomorrow I have to get up a 5AM to be out by 6AM because it is already too hot by 8:30 AM....what a life! I have got to get away more in the summer. To me, a still life is all about detail right now and that is why I do it. It really gives me that discipline for drawing with paint.
Thank you all for your kind comments.

How impressive... That's a goal and a challenge I'd like to give myself. Thanks for the inspiration.

By the way your painting is terrific! It even looks like it's good to eat.

HMMMMM... I guess the trick is to start small and stick with it. If I were to finish a painting a day, I'd be bound to improve!! Then I guess the trick is to figure out what to do with all of those paintings that pile up!!!

By the way... Is your avatar a self portrait?? If so it's also WONDERFUL!!

Sometimes we paint to see more clearly or to feel more deeply.

jd i've not participated in this forum before. this is the first painting and series of comments i've seen. i don't see a critique in the list. i don't know if critiques are welcomed or even wanted but i will offer one. if it is not what folks here want, fine, i will refrain from offering my observations. critique: it's a very nice start on an interesting arrangement. the light source is a little abimguous. it seems to be above right but the highlight and form lights aren't well developed. nor are cast shadows (a little bit from the yellow of the egg?). the values in the white of the egg are too flat. there aren't a lot of darks to work with but there are probably some nice 30% warm grays and then you can lay in some nice light warm highlight bumps where the steam raises the surface a bit. the sphere of the yellow of the egg is not too well developed. a little more form shadow and a little more work on the form light would round that shape nicely. the color in the bacon could be a nice richer deep rust color. i see a little cool gray that makes it a bit unappetizing. also the tangents on the ends of the strip of bacon are a distraction. make one end clearly cropped and maybe the other well instide the frame of the picture (inch or two). could see a little more reflected color in the plate from the egg and you could even invent a little of that deep rust color under the bacon instead of just dark gray. you do have a nice little color reflection under one end of the bacon. more of that would work. all of the shapes of the objects have form. the bumps in the bacon etc. work those shadows and lights. with a little more development this could be a really nice painting. the idea of painting every day is great. i wish i could discipline myself to do it. i always think "jeez, time i get set up and paint for an hour then clean my brushes a half a day is gone". keep up the effort. if this kind of critique is offensive then please say so. my intention is not so hurt anyone's feelings but maybe, collectively, we can raise all of our abilities and power to see. i'll post one of my still lifes so anyone who wants can pound away on me :-) i do welcome constructive critiques. art

Dear ak,

Thank you for the thoughtful critique!  Unfortunately, I don't have the painting anymore...I sold it and I am sorry that it has taken me so long to get back to you but I was away on vacation.  However, I hope you will keep poking around when I put up my next piece for criticism.  You have a very good eye.

Thanks,

Judith
