Leon, yes she was very caring. Another pupil was interested in public speaking debate. She allowed him to prepare for the junior debateing contest in the basement of the school during classes. She believed if you had another interest outside of academia and you were exceptional she would do her best to help you achieve your goal. He won the contest. Mother Mary Ruth was an exceptional person. |

I like her....with that grin she has, she looks like she probably had a great sense of humor.

Hi Jess, she had a great sense of humour. She would confiscate cigarettes from the students when they were caught smoktng. At the end of the school year and the last day of school when the students were leaving she would stand at the top of the fire escape and throw all the cigarettes she had confiscated down to them. |

I know that last time I was here I commented on this, must not have hit "submit" or something.
What OWS said... also, to me, you have captured the air of authority softened with humor. |

I love the portrait. It's very nicely controlled in tone. Have you been in touch with Mother Mary Ruth? It looks as if she may have been a School Sister of Notre Dame; if so, you can inquire about her at the Motherhouse in Baltimore. Maureen |

Hi Maureen,
Mother Mary Ruth was of the Ursalin order. I was in touch with her some years after I graduated and was working as a commercial artist. I painted a portrait of the patron saint of her order, Saint Ursula. I came to the convent to finish the painting. All the Nuns were thrilled.
I owe a lot to her for her confidence in me.
Mother Mary Ruth died in 1997. |
