Hi Heather ... a very good portrait... not having completed an oil portrait yet myself I'm probably not really qualified to comment. My observations are..
The drawing accuracy is very good.. excellent proportions...
THe hair is superb.
THe mouth is very realistic..
Skin tones are a little monotoned.. I would have added some warmer and cooler hues to really make the face pop... especially with such a cool background..
Oustanding job though..

| This is a beautiful piece of work, your grandson will treasure it always. I knew you were great with pastel, but I think that your talents in oil may even be better. The hair looks as though it will bounce any minute, you have done a wonderful job capturing the spark in his eyes. He looks a lot like you from your picture posted here. You are working very hard it sounds like. I have not done anything in weeks. Can not get moving. I have lost my mother recently and I just can not get the energy to create. My mother was the first inspiration I had to draw. She didn't see herself as an artist. She would sit and draw to entertain herself, in the nursing home she would make cards to send to people with little flowers and poems she made up. I need to get moving on some projects. Your painting is wonderful. scochran |

Hi Bruce, Thank you for the observations, they are correct regarding how the photo shows the painting. I couldn't get a good photo, there really are warmer hues in the face, and cooler ones in the shading. Plus in the real painting the blending is so much better so the face looks modeled. I have a good digital camera and I am so frustrated that I can't get a realistic photo for myself to keep. Will try again either today or tomorrow. |

Hi Shana, I am sooo sorry for your loss of your mum... when my dad passed on I did a portrait of him and it helped a lot to paint him through my tears, plus got my enthusiam back for life too.
Thank you for your very welcome comments and observations, and yes I have been working hard as I can. I spent the weekend in bed but Monday and yesterday I was fine. Also I updated my website last night so didn't get to bed until 3am.... big mistake, now I am paying for that. |

| This is really good!!!! I'm impressed by how you rendered the hair.... I wish it was easier to photograph oil, because I know there are some detalis, that I'm missing. |

| Heather, I agree with everyone, this is outstanding, as was your portrait of your niece or grandaughter you showed us once before! I only have one teensy observation... I thought that the skintones were more natural looking in the first posting, because the shadows were blended more and did not form lines... it could be just the photo, but when I saw the first one I loved it, Great Job! You always seem to paint your best when you paint something you love! And you can see it in this one! You have been a busy girl, I hope you don't do those marathons too often.. |

| Shana, I hope you see this, I was thinking the same thing as Heather, that you might find your muse if you paint your mom, you will spend the entire time remembering her and you will sense her presence while you paint... I really believe that painting is very spiritual and that you will help yourself heal from this painful loss... Good luck, my condolences also.... |

Hi Lola, OWS and Anna: Thank you for all your commentaries, I will be going to NC day after tomorrow returning on Sunday and I will definitely let you know how this is received.
Anna - it is the photo, I can't seem to get a good one of the finished painting, did five photo sessions in different lighting etc, so I give up. If someone in NC can do it I will ask them.... the lines are not really there, the face is modeled and everything is blended nicely. I just thought while typing this that maybe I have been shooting too close to painting and light is washing out a lot of middle tones/colors. If I have time I will reshoot back a little ways and then crop it to see what happens.... |

Nice work. Experiment with pushing your colors...Wow, did I say that. Don't listen to me. Just find some artist whose work you admire and study it...tyr to see it in person. Yes, the colors on these computers are not true. My reds seen to be too strong on the computer. That is a nice piece and reminds me of one I have out at http://flickr.com/photos/timsart/

| This is the best I could get as a final photo, still not too happy but will have to do. Grandson Kevin and family were very very happy with it. His fellow graduates said "Your Granny did this - WOW! Now I know where you get your talent from." I am just pleased he is very happy with it. |

| I think reducing the pixels has a lot to do with the contrast values not showing well. Or it is my camera, maybe I had it on the wrong setting all along and should have had it on the portrait setting. Too late now, I don't have it anymore. |

I sympathise with you Heather. My paintings never come out on post the way they look in real life. But I have to accept the fact they never will.
Adding more hi- lite might pick up the sheen in the lapels. |

Sandeep, thank you for your comment, it is his body language and smile.
Richard, I agree the posts never are correct. The sheen on the lapel is obvious on the painting, so if I highlighted it more it wouldn't have looked right. Thank you for commenting. |
