first off...i do love the painting...mts and water with fabulous skies definetly are a treat for the eye... i want to ask this though...are you using different sized palette knives? or are you just using the same for the whole painting...? the reason i ask is this.....we dont normally think of using several types of knives when doing knife work.....but????? would you complete a painting, normally, with one size brush? nopers.... so go treat yourself to the variety of shapes and sizes of knives that can give tighter or broader strokes...
something i see a lot....and since i am very aware of it i try to avoid doing it at all costs!...but... when creating water in a painting...one has to be sure to have the horizon line...flat...horizontal, otherwise the water is tilted..which makes the painting feel tilted...sometimes though its just how we took the photo! so be cautious! make sure the painting is level when taking the shot...if it IS the water...a bit of touch up will cure the problem... love this work your doing with the palette knife!...inspiring! |

Hi OWS, Thats a great idea. I've noticed different shapes of palette knives at Michaels and wondered if they would make a difference. Now that I'm doing more of it the answer is yes. Thanks for pointing that out. I use two different sized ones now, but they both have a triangular head. I have found that a different shaped head would have been better or easier at times. Thank you also for pointing out the horizon line. I thought it might be the photo, but I measured the height on both ends and they were the same, then I measured the middle and there it was, a bulge. Just slightly higher, but now that I see it, it stands out like a sore thumb. I could just say that it's the curvature of the lake, but no it's not suppose to be there. Thanks again for the catch, and I will make the correction. Jim
