this is something i am working on....its a value study of a photo series that i had taken....i have painted another of this type but decided i wanted to begin and study another....

delving into values, one can truly improve their work, especially color...one can mix pleasing colors, but can you nail the correct values?

this still has some corrections needed with the apples....some values are a bit too dark and arnt showing the side of the apple rollig  perspectively away from us....few more sittings and it should be set for a lil surprise in this one...

OWS,
This is a beautiful study of values. My fingers itch to lay down the rich colors and glazes that you do, I can see this finished. A surprise? I love surprises in art. Can't wait.

good morning! and happy mothers day to all  those  who earn the title!

and thank you for the wonderful comments...positive input is always inspiring!  i had to tweak up the values a bit more...and i believe i have them where i want them now....a bit more range and crispness....

i still have a tiny touch up to do on the bowl, but that wont take long, or shouldnt! ....i just need for it to completely dry before i er......do a lil abracadabra!

(chuckle) I often wish I could wave a magic wand! But then we would be deprived of the process of creation.

Hey, there is a magic wand for artists.
But it's seldom seen because it's hidden by a disguise called "Effortless"
It's name is "Hard Work".

unfortunately it wont permit me to post a larger image....sorry.....or i would gladly give ya one largerthanlife! ~wink~....

ron? your absolutely correct...hard work is the key to success of any kind in our line of craft...one has to put the hours in, before reaping the bounty!...

and heather? right o!....i wouldnt truly give up the work...although some are definetly harder and more quirky to handle...most times getting lost in the paint or if i am drawing...just lost in working the image....is so satisfying.....we couldnt get that rush, by just waving a wand eh?

jim...thank you so much for the high compliment...
anna,retha,gene,anna......thank you!!...

if you have never tried something like this? its really well worth trying at least once....but beware..it can be addictive!...a subject with a nice light source, or as in this painting, two light sources...have ya noticed that? has the light source puzzled ya? artificial light coming from the left......and a window that was back lighting slightly to the right and behind the set up......also a wall of book cases stands to the right where a tv sits..and i got a reflective light from that too....but...there were reasons to have these dynamic lights and shadows casting here and there.....i wanted to pull the eye away from noticing that i pushed the envelope on purpose...and i am balancing the fact that the apples in the bowl...two nearly atop each other are quite near center point......the rule is never center...but...one can manipulate a bit.....being the rebel i am....LOL..i just couldnt resist a composition of this sort....~wink~...

morning everyone!....bringing in a lil update, after a near disaster with this painting, when i applied liquin to work some glazes, the black paint wasnt dry! and nearly lost all the values until i realized what was happening....

but its set now....it was dry this morning so i began work on the apple....

only alizarin crimson glazes , followed by cad red medium glazing and a bit of white, terra verte and cad red medium created the highlight touches...but things were blended to create soft transitions or harder ones....

i have a lil series...this the second, of this type of painting...mostly values with black and white...and then a punch of color...now i just have to decide whether to continue glazing the whole painting, just finished the apple, or begin another and completely glaze that in color...lol...decisions decisions!...

OWS,
Wow! Talk about drama! That one apple almost punches the eyes out! I love it! The other apples are great too.

Interesting composition. I like the fact you have used color in the apple in the
foreground in contrast with the black and white apples. Very dramatic and original.

Amazing work! This is really something special.
The play of light and dark and the splash of bold
vibrant color. Just amazing.
