I just finished this one on Monday. It was done from a photo a friend took whle vacationing in Italy. I loved the color and the charm of this location, so I cropped it to fit a canvas I already had (8x16). I believe this one was the most fun I've had in awhile. Comments welcome. ~Kim

Very nice work Kim. I like the sense of depth you gave this. It may be from a photo, but you rendered it very well. Jim

Good composition, this looks like a photo in itself without the distortion you can get from a photo. Nicely done.

Jim and Heather, thank you for your compliments. I'm really glad you like it. Coming from the both of you, your words mean a lot. I've been amazed at how this forum is so helpful.

I really like the table... It sets the whole painting off for me. Very well done. Cutting off the scene on both side is a nice touch too. Reminds me of the paintings done in the late 1890s, when they embraced the idea with the advent of photograph.

i agree i like the image and how you have handled it!....one thing you must ask yourself though when creating an image..is where is my light source coming from? cast shadows are the glue for an image....it unites it a bit....i see shading beneath the lil table....which in itself is a lil gem...but i do see some nice lights in the iron railings and here and there.....a bit more tweaking the darks? would bring out your lights ...... |

Thank you to Anna, JBMerrill and One Who Sees. I'm glad I was successful with the "cropping" - wasn't sure if that was a good idea or not, but went with it because I liked the focus created by the boundaries. That little table really does something, doesn't it? I love it when you get surprises in the final result. Tweaking the darks is a good idea; unfortunately I already gave the painting to my friend. However, I'm working on another painting that has to be completed by the end of the month for my first entry into a juried (jurored?) show. I know what you're saying and will pay close attention to the light source.
