| Here's my latest. Thought I would have some more fun with color on a much larger scale (canvas is 30x36). I found that I prefer a smaller canvas. Any comments would be appreciated. |

Nice work Kim, Your shadow are good, but even if the trees really are bare as shown here I think for the paintings sake some branches and leaves would be a nice touch. The curvature of the landscape right behind the lady seems a little to abrupt an edge. It's like there is a drop off behind her or two paintings were joined together. There seems like more space should exist between the shoulders and the hat. Like some of her face should be showing. At least the bottom of the jawline. These are just suggestions. The perspective of the painting seems to be from a taller person taking a photo of her. Is this from a photo? Jim

Hi Kim...... I agree with everything that Jim suggested. Also, the woman's skirt and legs seems a bit stiff compared to the rest of the painting. I really love the cobblestones and the pigeons I like the style you painted this in.

| Thank you Jim and Jess for the suggestions. I did computer graphics for many years, and when I first began my oil painting lessons, I painted photo-realism style. Trying to get more painterly, I'm still trying to find that balance. I had thought about adding limbs to the trees, but I wondered if they would draw your attention away from the lady. Now that you think they would be good, I may go back and add them. As for the background, I'm having trouble seeing what you're seeing, but I'm going to give it more thought. The elderly lady was challenging. My inspiration for this came from a black and white photo on a notecard. The original photo depicted her talking to an elderly man (she wasn't looking down), a purse in her left hand and an umbrella in the right. The background was buildings. I agree, the lady could use some improvements. This is my first attempt at a realistic person that wasn't in a background setting. Jim, when I put the cobblestones in, that's when the perspective shifted a bit. Thank you for all of the input...it's always helpful and gives way for thought on the next one. ~Kim |

Hi Kim....
I'm glad you specified where you got your images from......I've never seen pigeons in a country setting. Was wondering about that.

Jess, I love how we all see and associate different things in paintings, etc. I never thought about pigeons being in a country scene (I added those to the composition), but when I envisioned this, I wanted it to feel like a quiet park. I automatically equated park with pigeons, not really thinking that the times I've seen them have been very populated areas, namely cities. Thanks for the insight. |

Hi Kim, In my opinions: -the lady is very elegant but looks like a younger person to me. -The pigeons are very nice but seem too big in comparison with the person. Overall the painting is very nice, nice shading, nice composition, nice technique. Anna. |

| Anna, thank you for your kind words. I'm totally with you on the size of the birds. I think her feet could stand to be larger, too (I enlarged them once, but I think if I go any larger, they would be too big for her body.) Oh, well...I have learned a lot from this one. Thanks to everyone for their helpful comments. ~Kim |

it has a clicky lil feel to it.....and as its on a large canvas? ya just never know!...
i do see all the things the others have mentioned...but i have also seen a lot of contemporary work that has nothing to do with realism.....eh...just want to point out that the pigeons? might be a tad too large in comparison to the figure....but just a small point...i do like your color palette as well!....very nice muted colors..drag this baby off to an exhibition opportunity and see what happens! |

| Thanks, OWS. It's funny that you mention dragging this off to see what happens. I originally started this with the intention of entering it in my first local juried show (if I waited until I thought I was good enough, that may never happen! :o) ). I just got the prospectus and I'm over the limit by 6" - wouldn't you know it?! Thanks for the compliments! ~Kim PS - Did you ever finish your painting with the giraffes? That was beautiful! |
