Hi Heather,
When I was a teenager I was amazed at the miniature portraits in the Museum from the 16th and 17th century. How, I would ask myself could someone reproduce a likeness so small with some of the portraits being less than 1 and ½ inch in diameter? It must be very painstaking for you! Good work Heather, congratulations.

Thank you Leon. Yes it is painstaking, from her chin to middle of forehead is 1/4". I work with a magnifying glass and I am thinking of getting a bigger one so I can see even better. My paintbrushes are #0 and #1 rounds for head and body, for the background I can use a little larger but not much. I have always been fascinated by the old portraits done for lockets with a lock of the person's hair on the other side. Colors are always better than photo shows, plus photographing this small even in macro it is a little blurred.

Very nice Heather,
You have one steady hand to do something this small.
I wouldn't think you're going to have a problem selling
this on e-bay.

Heather, You are amazing! Beautiful work.
I don't see how you get that much detail in such a small area, even with a magnifying glass.

Thank you Jim and Ron. Your encouragement is really appreciated. E-bay is not selling much right now, not just me, I would estimate that about only 10% of the art work is selling at a fair price right now. It doesn't bother me, as I am still learning how to maneuver around the site with selling, setting up my store etc. plus I need more inventory, so am painting miniatures because they are lower priced, though I really do put almost as much work in them as I do a 12x16 canvas.

With a magnifying glass the #0 and #1 round brushes seem too big, but I just use the very end of the point It is hard on the eyes, I have to take frequent breaks, but I do love doing them.

Heather, this is very nice. Do you have one of those magnifying glasses that hang on a cord around your neck? I think I bought mine in a needlework shop. I've never tried painting that small, but have used it for very fine needlework. It works quite well, and allows both hands to be free. Good luck with these miniatures. Gene

Thank you Anna, Anna and Gene.  My magnifying glass just has a handle, it isn't really that big, when I get to the store I am going to buy a larger one.  Thanks for the gook luck wishes, I don't expect to do much for about six months, by then people who buy will begin to recognize my name, so I have to keep putting work up to get the exposure and prove that I am productive and worth investing in.  Time consuming but fun.

Another gem. You should get one of those magnifying glasses jewellers use.

Thank your Richard for your comment. A jewellers glass is a great idea, will keep both hands free also.
