Hello to everyone!

I am in the process of picking up where I left off after a 40 year spring break. This is the first painting I've done since returning to my true passion of oil painting. I am looking for some pointers and feedback.

Thank you, George

40 years! Geesh. I took an 8 year break and I felt like THAT was a long time! I like your painting.....I think the subject matter is really nice. I would suggest adding more definition. The building looks great. I'd like to see darker shadows.....maybe the roof could be a bit darker? The red/green of the trees/shrubs is a bit confusing. Seems like it should be more of one or the other. Just an opinion. Glad you're making a comeback! Hope to see more work from you.

This is very nice, especially after a 40 year hiatus. I think all you
need is to add some highlights to the plants, add some darks for definition
to your building and highlight the areas where the sun is hitting it.

Hi Jess. Thanks for the feedback. I have to admit that part of the problem with trees is that they are unfinished. . Thanks for pointing that out to me. I will follow through on your suggestions. As I am self taught, I need all the help I can get. Thanks again.

Regards, George

Glad that you are getting back to painting. If I were you, I would study the perspective on the building. Was it done plein aire? Or did you work from a photo? If from a photo, you can easily judge your distances and directions using a ruler. Painting from plein aire would be a lot harder.......... Thanks for posting this. Good luck...Gene

Hi Shana, Thank you for your kind words. Though I am just a beginner, I enjoy painting, and have fun doing it. I find  that I learn a lot through reading art books. I hope to attend some classes in the future. Again, thank you for the feedback.

The painting was copied from a photo in a Walter Foster book by Rosalind Cuthbert. The book is titled Artists Questions Answered. I have learned what little I know from such books. I plan on attending some classes in the future. I attempted to scale up the size by using a grid of squares. Obviously I lost a few details here and there. I plan on making a few changes based on the feedback I have received. I thank you for taking the time to help me.

Hi George,

I can sympathize with you.  In the late 1950’s I had wanted to attend the Kansas City Art Institute, but gave up wanting to be an artist until about four years ago.  Keep at it.  It will be an inspiration to us all.
