Nice impressionistic style. I think the roses in the vase
need just a little more definition though. I know it's probably
the style your after, but that's just my thought.

Nice to meet you SWhite.  I like your painting, I think my first impression was the same....need more definition on the ones in the vase, but what would really add to it, would possibly to open the larger one on the right in the vase??

I like the shape of your vase....

Oh How I would have loved to do just those things you suggested, but my art teacher is trying to loosen me up.  I have a tendency to be photo realistic as you can see by the rose to the left. and she really wants me relax with my painting and suggest what it would be.

I am studying color  under her and she is also teaching me how to be loose. LOL.

I have also been studying with Morgan Samuel Price through Academy Art Live.  Wonderful new concept for taking a 3 hour art class at home for $25.  Can't beat that.

Hi! I really like this - actually the first thing I liked about it is the looseness of your strokes! I think that is not more linear definition or specific detail that is needed in the roses in the vase, but a stronger contrast of values to make them pop a bit more and define them as the center of interest. I'd keep those same lovely loose brush strokes, but strengthen the contrast of the values. I also paint realistically and get frustrated when my work gets to "tight" - let your brush have fun. If you focus more on the values and less on the lines, this really helps.

I so agree with what you are saying, except that everytime I put the complementory color in it just didn't work, the blue or yellow didn't look right made it greeny.  I'm going to work on another one of these, totally using the color wheel to see what happens.  I am really experimenting with color right now trying to see what works.  My instructor uses the Munsell Color Wheel.  We mix our own color charts starting with primary, complementary, tertiary (sp) shades, secondary colors with grays etc. and it really is quite exciting.  But yellowish green or teal wasn't cutting it with this shade of pink.  I did use a lot of cad red light, but you can't see that in the photo.

Thanks for all the input,  I learn from constructive critiscism, actually we all do.

I like your painting very much It has a nice softness to it. I LOVE the roses on the table! I do agree with the above comments. The roses on the table have such nice definition that it makes the ones in the vase look as if the need a little more rosy-red to darken them a bit. Very nice work!

I agree with above comments, no need to lose the loose style. Have you tried purple/red for the shadows of the roses in the vase? Just lightly, the vase is such a lovely dark the roses can take it. Good composition too, and impressionistic style.

i like the loose style as well but i have to agree with the others..i think more contrasts in some of the values on the flowers.. and a bit more variety in the position of the heads/openings/petals....

you have a lil concave feeling to the straight of the table front...i am not sure if that was because the canvas was slightly tilted while you took the photo or not?....

many times ~using compliments~ you have to match the colors a bit....are they muted? then you need the compliment but a muted one ...
the roses are a form of red....so you need a form of green as the compliment...maybe a purple plus sap or terre verte plus purple...but done using less paint...as you want it to be a bit softer worked in the shadows....

and? learning new things from a variety of teachers is a very good thing....BUT....dont let them pull you aware from work that you feel a bit more akin to....so if they are making you work loose?
when you paint at home? let yourself go into the mode that you wish!....variety is fine....but if you dont paint as you love...the things you love? the connection sometimes for you, just isnt there....

Thank you so much for your time and comments.  I want to get a hold of this painting so bad.  And I still might.  I haven't varnished it yet.

I think that using an alizarine crimson and sap green would have worked for the complementory.  I used alizarine alot with the white in this painting.  We use viridian or thalo green on our palette.  And they just weren't working.  I should have used the thalo and some ultramarine and maybe a touch of orange to get to sap green.  OR JUST PULL OUT THE OLE SAP GREEN!! LOL.

I love my teacher, we are learning to mix our own colors and it is an exciting class.  I'll post another later.
