Hello everyone!

I am on a roll.  This is definetly a mixed medium.  I started out with watercolor and when I got near the end decided that it needed a little punch so I went in with soft pastel to accent and highlight parts of the painting that need it.  I call the painting "docked" it's done on cold press paper.

Comments appreciated.

This is nice Deb!
I respect you for using more than one medium. I've never had the confidence to 'add' another medium, but I've often admired work that uses more than one. I can't get past that 'this a pastel painting' or 'this is an oil painting' attitude while I'm working on the piece. I think it's just some sort of mental block! (which I seem to have many of)
Nice piece, love the light and colors!

Thanks Mike,

Great comment coming from you!  Your artwork is just awesome and just so you know, even if I don't leave you a comment on your pieces, I think  all your work is GREAT!

When I started working on this watercolor, I had no intention to make this piece a mixed medium, but when I got into it, I messed up the light areas on the deck.  Instead of chucking it completely, I thought well lets see what happens when I add some light color pastels.  Then I was liking the way the pastel left some uneven highlights so I added a few more colors to brighten the trees and the water.  I don't know about combining any other mediums, but this method works great on "museum rising board".  I did not use this in this instance, but I was happy with the end results.  I would never had done that on purpose except with MRB board.

Thanks for your compliment!

Thank you, Deb!
Funny how many good things come from mistakes, isn't it?!!!

Melissa,
Museum Rising Board is very hard to find, but can be purchased online, which is where I found it.  They also carry it at framing stores.  The board is used mainly for matting.  This is an acid free pure white board that comes in several thicknesses.  The thicker boards tend to hold up to the water very well and the texture gives enough for the pastel to hang on to.  When doing the pastel over the watercolor, it is used to highlight or excite a color, but it's important to leave the watercolor showing through enough to make it look almost dimensional.
I am attaching a painting that I did on the board so you can see the difference.

Just lovely work! I can think of no improvements, at all.

HI Deb
I love that first painting particularly - unusual color combination and lovely texture. I too often find that I am not so happy with a watercolour or acrylic and then it's pastel to the rescue! I used it recently when I was having a problem with acrylic skin tones. The pastel gave much more control.

Thanks for the great comments.  I really appreciate your thoughts and comments.

I totally enjoy having a variety of art supplies to choose from, so having watercolors and pastels as a choice just makes my work more interesting.  Glad you like this one.

Deb,
I love the depth that adding the pastels to watercolors. I believe they a good pairing of medium.
Your work has a lot more life by adding the pastel. Both paintings are very nice. How large are they?

Shana,

The first one is about 9 x 12 and the second one is about 10 x 10.  Working on the musuem board has some advantages because it is not as bumpy as the watercolor paper, but sometimes the bumpiness adds to the painting too.  The fun part is being able to save something you thought was a goner!

Thanks,

Deb
