I was thinking of experimenting and I think someone else mentioned it, buthow does doing watercolor on gesso workout? i think someone siad it is a little unpredictable ? but was thinking of doing a watersoluble oil/ and watercolor on gessoed paper ( i waws going to do in watercolor but decided it needed a bigger paper --am out of large watercolor paper. and low on cash. trying not to let that stop me from doing what i want and am tired of making really really small watercolors just cause that's the only size i could afford last time I was at the art store) Dawna

Dana,

Ive done that on my paintings before, and yes it is a little unpredictable but watercolour is a little unpredictable in any case.
but I still used paper as the basis.

What were you thinking of using as basis.?

Thanks for replying. I'm glad i'm not the only one who's tried it. Yes i used paper as a base. I was going to do watersoluble oils on the top if it got too unpredictable and i ended up not liking it, but it turned out so well i left it alone. It is posted uner "untitled" in the watercolor forum. I've never acually tried m9ixed media before, but one of these days I need to try and experiment with doing it.

Hi Dawna, I have used gesso under watercolour and have really enjoyed the results. The paint does act somewhat differently, but it is easier to wipe back and lift paint because the colour doesn't soak into the paper. In the image I have attached you can see the wipebacks in the swirls around the fish

I have also used gesso on watercolor paper, sometimes for effects, but most often as a way to reuse paper that I was not happy with the first picture on.
