I've recently read 2 articles about Alyona Nickelsen who works in colored pencil with odorless mineral spirits. (Artist Mag, Jan/Feb 2007 and American Artist April 07) You layer your colors and then use a brush loaded with odorless mineral spirits over the pencil. The m. spirits disolve the binder in the pencil and the pigment can be moved around like paint. Wow! The first layer acts like an underpainting and then subsequent layers just melt right in. You can use just pencil over the "painted" parts to add detail and texture. This is the first piece I've tried. I'm going to mount it on black board and collage some oriental style papers around it to create a matte.

Thanks for your comments! I'm really enjoying this process. You can layer and add so much more depth by blending with the mineral spirits. And it seems to eliminate that waxy "bloom" that cp pieces get so often.

This is beautiful. And I think the matting you have in mind will really enhance it and add to the Oriental look of it. Good luck. Gene

Hi Carroll,
This really beautiful work. I'm going back and re-read that article in Artists Magazine.
What brand of colored pencils do you use? Also what brand of mineral spirits?
Your work is exciting. I hope to see more of it.

Thanks everyone! I really had fun doing it. That's what it's all about - that creative process! Ron, I use mostly Prismacolor pencils, I have some Derwents, Colerase, Verithin, some with no names on them, even some Crayola! (I can't pass by a cool set of pencils, I have so many that I have to sneak them in the house, so I don't hear, "what- more pencils!?) I also use Ko-I-Noor Progresso woodless pencils, but they don't seem to disolve as well as the others. Different binder, I guess. The mineral spirits I used is Grumbacher Odorless Thinner. I used a brush to apply it, but also ussed my fingers to smoodge it around and mix the colors. Great fun, got color all over my hands! oh, the bronzy parts are Derwent metallic pencils - copper.
Thanks again, y'all.

Forgot to ask....what was this done on? Paper? Board?

i did it on the smooth side of a piece of buff colored Canson Mi-Teintes pastel paper (12x16) dry-mounted to a piece of black foam-core (16x20). I mounted the painting on the foam-core after I painted it. Then attached the collage bits and papers to the black board showing around the portrait.
