I started my career as an illustrator, and was the staff artist at the "Fire island Tide Newspaper" for 14 years.
I didn't work with an art director...I was sort of the all in one art director/illustrator/cartoonist.
Here's one of my favorite cover illustrations from back then...mmm, it's a little dated, but I think you'll all enjoy it.

| Yes, I would love to see your mermaid. I am just learning how to paint them, much different from regular portraits. |

Hi Jim,
Fabulous work. I am a budding illustrator. May I ask what medium you used to create the piece? |

Kerry, first, I'm not Jim, I'm JM : D Second, to answer your question, "The Sea Serpent" is painted in acrylic on two ply illustration board. |

I like how the dragon shape encircle the boat, the yelow sails draw the sight to them, well both thing smake the boat the cente rof the pic, also a great level of detail, I can tell even with the image size (too bad I wanted to see the details of the scales and the head of the monster), well too bad is a bit? old, still you are right guess we all enjoyed watching it |

This is wonderful JM.
My teen daughter has the 'illustrator' gene. She can work from the immagination much better than me. But she says illustration is about telling us something! (I wonder if I was that smart once?)
I hope she'll get over her shyness and post something. She made a wonderful frog prince recently.
Again..wonderful art! |

Wonderful color and movement! I LOVE it! I have toyed around with testing the waters in illustration; but I find it a bit intimidating. What are your thoughts on finding a representative? What about licensing your pre-existing work out? I always feel a bit over my head without a degree behind me!
I'd love some advice!
Thanks,
Kelly |

-River. Your daughter shouldn't be too shy about posting her work...after all, most illustration is done for public view in print and advertising. Telling a story is part of what illustration is, some is very technical in nature, some representative of a product or subject, but it's all work that you are hired to do. Your usually hired based on your individual style of art and your portfolio should represent a consist use of that style, not a mish mash of different technics and media's. If you do have a few different styles, make sure you have a few different portfolio's feature them. It will however make it a bit more difficult to advertise yourself down the road, because you really want to get known for being the best at one thing, so all art directors know it on first sight. The only real exception for this rule is having a portfolio for you color work and a portfolio for your black & white work.
-Kelly, it's hard for me to answer that, never had an agent. I worked freelance for over 20 yrs. When I landed the position at the "Fire Island Tide" I was both art director and artist, so I art directed myself for 14 yrs. Made my life so much easier and some say it spoiled me. I mean I got to do what I wanted. There are a number of online resources you can still find for agents, how to write an invoice, a few organizations you might like to join like the Artist Graphic Guild which provides all sorts of info and help for you. Learn how to write a contract. many online sources for that.
Three things I will drill into your head now is about what should be stated clearly in your written Contract: -Make sure it's in there that you are only selling "First Time North American Publishing Rights, unless you wish to negotiate a full purchase price. -The art work is to be returned to the artist -Payment due on or before publication
Your art should always have your name visual some where on the work with the copy right emblem next to it (that circle with a "C" in it) and date(just the year) |

JM Artist-
Thanks so much for your advice. I will look into joining some of the organizations online and locally. I haven't had too much luck with a few of the area organizations as of yet, but I'll look into the AGG.
I suppose I need to start hitting the pavement and promoting my own work at the same time as honing in on my contract writing skills!
Your website, by the way, is so elegantly done and your work is beautiful!
Thanks again for your advice!
